August 16, 2019 (OTTAWA) Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers are pleased to see that the Government of Canada has committed to continuing its work on the details of mitigation packages for poultry and egg farmers affected by the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
The federal government has promised full and fair compensation for all dairy, poultry and egg farmers affected by recent trade deals. This commitment was reflected in today’s announcement for the dairy sector, and we look forward to the government delivering an equitable outcome for the poultry and egg sector. Additionally, we appreciate the government’s commitment to give no additional access to the dairy sector in future trade agreements. This same commitment must apply to our sector.
Canada’s poultry and egg sector represents 4,500 farmers and more than 127,500 jobs in Canada. Our industries are diverse, and make a sizable contribution to the Canadian economy. Our focus is on programs and initiatives that strengthen the long-term health of our overall sector, allowing our farmers to continue to deliver the made-in-Canada products that Canadians want and expect. This approach allows us to navigate the unique dynamics of our respective industries and plan for the future.
We are eager to continue this work with government officials and look forward to the successful conclusion of these discussions.
Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers are the voice of farmers in Canada’s supply-managed poultry and egg sectors.
